Most people do the opposite without noticing. Effort gets divided across every front that asks for it, each one gets enough attention to stay alive and not enough to matter, and the quarter ends with real work done and nothing taken.

This instrument measures the two things your calendar cannot: where your effort actually goes, and whether it is going where the return is.

How it works

You list the fronts you are currently pushing on and divide a hundred units of effort between them — as they are today, not as you wish they were. Then you judge what each front would return if it went well.

The instrument then does three things:

• Shows you the shape of your quarter. Width is effort, depth of colour is return potential. Most people are surprised by their own bar.
• Delivers a verdict on concentration. Spread across five fronts with no main effort, and it will tell you plainly that this is the shape that loses quarters.
• Finds where effort and return disagree. It compares the share of effort each front receives against the share it deserves on your own ratings, and names the single reallocation that would help most.
